Recently, I decided to randomly drop by a friend’s house unannounced.  This friend, let’s call him Dave, happily greeted me into his home. Dave is an older, wealthy gentleman, about five years my mother’s senior, and was once interested in me.  Now, he has an eighteen year old live-in boyfriend who’s graduating this year from high school, and they’ve known each other for five months.

Once inside, Dave didn’t hesitate to share a recap — or gush, rather — on the recent happenings of just how crazy his new boy is about him and likewise.  After a good solid boast-filled half hour, including meeting his new son or boyfriend or whatever, the spotlight turned to me:

D: So, what about you, any new boys?

J: Kinda.  I’m dating or talking to this one guy in particular.

D: So, have you fucked him yet?

J: Nope.

D: Really? [surprised]

J: Yeah, I know it’s hard to believe, but I’ve matured quite a bit since last time I’ve seen you.  I’ve become increasingly aware of my self-worth.

D: Well, then why aren’t you with him now?

J: He’s packing.

D: For what?

J: To go to San Diego to visit his parents for two weeks.

D: And are you going to be ok?

J: I’ll survive. [laughs] I’m nervous that he might find a cute boy and decide to stay there. [smiles]

D: Maybe you should give it up and give him something to think about for the next two weeks.

J: [smile fades] No.  It’s way too early.  I mean, he already told me that he wanted to but I told him that I didn’t want to ruin it.  He understands that.

D: Well, if not now then when do you plan on doing?

J: After I get the title.

D: Wow.  Well, you know, if you wait that long, you might not get the title.

J: Then, that’s a chance I’ll just have to take.

[I got up and got ready to leave.  As we were saying our goodbyes and what not…]

D: I still think that you should give him a little something something to remember you by for when he goes to SoCal.

J: That’s nice but that’s not my major concern right now.  Do I want this to work?  Sure.  Do I want him to be my new boyfriend?  Of course.  But if it works, it works, and if it doesn’t, it doesn’t.  Either way, I’ll be fine.
